Tess of the d'Urbervilles Part 1

Recently, I have started to read Tess of the d'Urbervilles and I am beginning to become very interested in this book. In the first chapter, Tess's dad learns that his ancestor was one of the twelve knights that assisted the Lord of Estremavilla and that branches of his family held manors all over Normandy. To Tess's dad, it meant that if he found his wealthy relatives, then he too could be wealthy. Her dad becomes ecstatic from the news and decides to go to a nearby pub to celebrate. Her dad becomes too drunk to deliver the bee hives the next day and Tess decides to do it for him with her younger brother, Abraham. This eventually leads to Tess accidentally killing her dad's horse which convinces her to go to Alec Stokes-d'Urberville's house to claim her kin because she wants to get some help for her family.
After reading the first few chapters, I think Tess is a very sweet, innocent, and caring girl. For example, she takes care of her younger siblings as if they were her own children and she volunteers to do things that will help her family. She also feels uncomfortable when the subject of her getting married is brought up and when she meets Alec for the first time, she acts very politely and feels slightly embarrassed for telling him that they are related as soon as they meet.
I am interested in finding out how Tess will transform throughout the book and how she will be at the end of the book. Part 2 will come after spring break

  1. Tess of the d'Urbervilles does sound like an interesting book from what you've written. Tess seems like a very noble character, do you think that she is going to change a lot throughout the book?

    1. Sorry this is soo late. Before I read the entire book, I thought she would change a lot, but after reading the book it seems like she changed slightly and tried to stay true to her beliefs.

  2. This seems like a pretty intresting book. However, when she goes to her family is she going to ask for money to buy a new horse or is she trying to hide from the fate of her father.

    1. I think Tess was expecting to receive money to buy a new horse for her dad after she claimed her kin, but her mom kept on pushing her to marry Alec which eventually lead to her downfall.

  3. I read this book for my Flow Project...definitley an interesting read if you can get past the Old English writing. But regardless, Tess hasn't seen much of life yet. I kind of viewed the horse's death as a loss of innocence and a realization of responsibility. When she assumes the task of claiming relations to Alec and his mother, she also assumes a tragic fate that will forever haunt her. I hope you write a part 2 about this. :)

  4. Based on what you have written Tess of the d'Urbervilles seems like an interesting book. It also seems as though it doesn't have a long boring beginning. I think it's great how you're able to analyze the main character early in the story.
